Healthy frozen waffles have become my ultimate breakfast go-to in recent years. This handy breakfast pantry staple not only is tasty (and great for piling fruit and peanut butter on), but also incredibly convenient. Just pop them into the toaster, and within a few short minutes, you’ll have a filling breakfast without having to dirty a ton of dishes or spend a bunch of money. Plus, many healthy frozen waffle options today are packed with nourishing ingredients, such as whole grains. Whether you lead a busy life, are looking for a quick bite, or want to broaden your breakfast horizons, healthy frozen waffles make a great addition.
And yet, with so many different brands (and kinds) of healthy frozen waffles out there, which ones are worth giving a spot in your freezer to? Because of this, we decided to take matters into our own hands. We set out to find the best healthy frozen waffles that offer great flavor and texture and incorporate more health-conscious ingredients — with a focus on four popular categories: gluten-free, protein, organic, and multigrain. Here are the ones that scored highly, and a few runner ups we also couldn’t help but mention.

Best Gluten-Free: Van’s Gluten-Free Blueberry Waffles
These waffles are some of my favorite gluten-free waffles (and waffles, period). Whenever I stop at a grocery store and see that these are in stock, I have to pick up a box. Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, these delicious waffles are made with blueberries that add a touch of sweetness. Some gluten-free waffles lack texture (or crumble after coming out of the toaster), but these hold up really well. They’re also dairy and egg-free and are relatively easy to find in supermarkets which is helpful while traveling.

Runner up: Nature’s Path Gluten-Free Buckwheat Wildberry
Made with buckwheat and wild blueberries, I found that these waffles were still tasty but had a slightly drier texture than Van’s and a different kind of blueberry taste. Because of this, Van’s got the top spot.
Best Protein: Kodiak Cakes Buttermilk and Vanilla Power Waffles
Kodiak Cakes is the way to go when you want a satisfying and filling waffle that doesn’t hold back on flavor. Made with whole grains, flax seed, and quinoa, these waffles are super hearty — exactly what you want in a protein waffle. Each serving is packed with 12 grams of protein and only non-GMO ingredients are used. Be sure to note that since these are so thick and fluffy, they need to be toasted on low until heated throughout.

Runner up: Van’s Power Grains Waffles
Van’s makes a tasty protein waffle, but they’re smaller and thinner than Kodiak Cakes’ version and have less protein. Because of this, Kodiak Cakes takes the lead.
Best Organic: Annie’s Organic Homestyle Waffles
Annie’s makes tons of great organic products, and their frozen waffles are no exception. These low-sugar waffles have a delicate vanilla flavor and don’t dry out easily in the toaster. Its criss-cross surface pattern is also great for holding butter, syrup, honey, or, if you’re like me, peanut butter. Free from artificial flavors and USDA-certified organic, I also found that these tasted most like traditional homemade waffles.

Runner up: Whole Foods Organic Mini Waffles
These waffles are an excellent choice if you’re looking for a more cost-effective organic waffle option, but they do have more sugar than Annie’s.
Best Multigrain: Kashi Seven Grain Waffles
Dense and chewy, these Kashi waffles are packed with seven different grains, including rye, brown rice, oats, and barley. They have a slight sweet oat smell (which I found pleasant) and toast well in the toaster. I also like how these fiber-rich waffles keep you full, unlike other options that leave you feeling unsatisfied.

Runner up: Trader Joe’s Multigrain Waffles
Inexpensive and tasty but less dense than the Kashi version. They also have a lighter feel to them.
