Having trouble finding a fun family outdoor getaway close to home? Check out this lake adventure in Lac La Biche!
At the beginning of the year I was determined to spend more time outside exploring Alberta with our family of 6 – Lac La Biche was at the top of my list to add to our outdoor trips.
We tested out renting an Air BnB in Slave Lake, AB earlier in the year and once the Alberta Parks website opened I jumped to reserve one night in Lac La Biche’s Sir Winston Churchill Provincial park.
If you are not a fan of roughing it with a tent and no amenities, check out Alberta Parks “Comfort Camping” section that has varying cabins and yurts to rent throughout Alberta.
The cabin was very well supplied (more than I anticipated!) and clean. There was even wifi! In contrast to some Air BnBs I have stayed at, this cabin was much more kid friendly, accessible, and clean.
During this Lac La Biche getaway we enjoyed: eating breakfast for dinner (scrambled eggs and bacon), bush pie cinnamon buns with icing, playing cards by the smoky fire, watching the Oilers game after the kids were in bed, playing board games, practicing casting for fishing, waking up with the sun rise, exploring Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and all the beaches on the island.
The afternoon when we check out, we also toured the town of Lac La Biche for a coffee shop on Saturday morning. The town of Lac La Biche is old school, in the loveliest way.
There are no McDonalds, no Tim Hortons, no Starbucks. The only big chain fast food brands we saw on the main streets were a combined Taco Bell and KFC location. The town has everything available through local, small businesses!
Where are we going next? The rest of our summer is full of planned day trips – Sylvan Lake, Cold Lake, Gull Lake, and much more! I’m not taking summer for granted!
