Cordless Drill
This video is a little longer because I show a lot of the attachments you can get for the drill.
If you just want the basics, you probably only need to watch the first 6 or 7 minutes.
The DeWalt drill is $99.00, it was double that a couple years ago.

hey kids so it’s tool Tuesday we’re
00:03
finally getting to the drill I know that
00:06
it’s been a while in a while everybody’s
00:08
kind of been waiting for it but I wanted
00:10
to kind of build up to it because you
00:11
needed to know about sockets because you
00:13
also use sockets with with your drill
00:15
and the different pieces we haven’t got
00:17
to the screwdrivers but I think you know
00:20
I can kind of introduce screwdrivers a
00:22
little bit or at least the tips and what
00:24
they are called and I’m gonna put it put
00:28
together a series of smaller videos and
00:31
I’ll string them all together showing
00:33
how each piece works so I’ll clear my
00:35
table and show each individual piece but
00:38
before we do that you know the drill I
00:40
got a bad joke for you bonus bad joke
00:42
right well it’s going to tell you a joke
00:45
about a drill but I thought it was too
00:47
boring yeah so anyway let’s get into it
00:53
okay so before we even get into the
00:56
cordless drill I wanted to show you what
00:59
I’ve had this for probably 25 years I
01:03
think and this is what we used to do
01:04
this you can tell it’s kind of it’s been
01:07
used but um and so this is kind of the
01:10
concept here right you’re gonna deal
01:12
with this these jaws here that are gonna
01:16
hold your whatever bit you’re gonna put
01:20
in there okay and so kind of how this
01:22
works is you can hold hold it hold it
01:25
down and see how those those are opening
01:28
up inside there and then if I flip
01:30
there’s a it’s a reversible variable
01:33
speed okay and that’s what most cordless
01:36
ones are – so you can if I put it on
01:38
reverse and I hold this Chuck right here
01:42
I can go like that and you can see that
01:44
it’s actually tightening okay so it’s
01:46
all the way tightened now if I flip the
01:49
switch and I do the same thing the
01:50
opposite way I can open those back up
01:52
okay so we’re gonna do that with with
01:55
the cordless drill so back in my day
01:59
this is kind of all we had and then you
02:01
would put your bit in here okay so a
02:05
little bit put that in there
02:08
hand tighten it and then you’d have on
02:13
or you always had a Chuck key okay sorry
02:17
I’m fighting it here um you have a Chuck
02:19
key and then you’d have to tighten it
02:21
down so you go like that and tighten it
02:23
down okay and then you’d want to go I
02:27
was always taught to go around it I
02:28
don’t know that that matters but now now
02:30
you’re good to go okay so I just wanted
02:33
to show you something for comparison and
02:35
like I said this is a variable speed
02:36
which means if you hold down the trigger
02:38
lightly I can go a certain speed or if I
02:41
put it okay all right so that’s that
02:46
okay so here’s here’s the drill that I
02:50
would recommend for most homeowners
02:51
because it’s around $100 and it’s served
02:53
me well I’ve had it for I think a year
02:56
and a half and the battery you know the
02:59
big part of the quality and a cordless
03:01
drill is the battery if you get if you
03:03
go to cheap the battery won’t hold a
03:05
charge after a while and you’ll be
03:07
frustrated so I would highly recommend
03:08
you spend you know again it’s $100 so
03:12
yeah so I think you’ll be happy with
03:14
this drill it has two speeds a 1 and a 2
03:18
right here the one is for speed and then
03:20
the 2 is for torque don’t worry about
03:24
I just basically leave it on one for
03:26
most most jobs if you’re just drilling a
03:29
hole in sheetrock or whatever you can
03:32
get by just leaving it on one I hardly
03:34
ever take it off of one okay and then if
03:38
we’re gonna add a bit to it okay
03:41
actually let me show you this first so
03:43
there’s there’s this collar right here
03:45
this inside collar and it has a series
03:48
of numbers on it one all the way up to
03:51
where it’s got a drill bit on it okay
03:57
and when you’re going to change your bit
03:59
remember how I showed you that cordon
04:01
drill how you have to change the bit
04:03
kind of similar but we’re gonna you
04:07
won’t need to actually use that Chuck
04:09
key to tighten it down and I’ll show you
04:12
what you need to do so you’re gonna hold
04:13
this and then you’re gonna I got to get
04:18
it tight enough to where it’ll actually
04:20
open okay so you have to keep turning
04:23
that then you see that I kept turning
04:27
so that this thing would actually open
04:29
so now if I hold this color here and I’m
04:32
running it at 13 right now the further
04:35
down you go it’s easier to hold it yeah
04:39
so let’s just put it at like 11 so now
04:42
I’m gonna hold it I’m just holding that
04:45
and see how the jaws are opening okay
04:48
and again it’s a very good speed to okay
04:51
so now we’re gonna put this this is the
04:53
bit I almost always use I just leave
04:56
this bit in there because it’s a
04:58
phillips head and it’s and it’s got a
05:01
good point on it so it fits most of the
05:03
screws that I usually use okay so now
05:06
I’m just gonna put that in there and
05:08
then I’m gonna put it I’m gonna push
05:10
this button okay the forward button and
05:13
then I’m just going to hold it hold this
05:15
right here right I’m gonna hold it and
05:18
see I don’t you can see that let’s see
05:21
anyway the jaws are closing around it
05:24
okay see that and then I just hold this
05:27
and if I put this on a on a lower one
05:31
it’s really easy to hold this the
05:34
further I go up though it gets harder
05:37
and harder to hold that if you go all
05:38
the way up to the the drill part it’s
05:41
really hard and I think you can even
05:44
flip down yeah you can actually hold it
05:48
at the at the drill unless you’re
05:50
stronger than me maybe you maybe you can
05:52
okay so and I’ll show you with all those
05:55
dials are for for other things but if
05:57
you’re trying to put put a bit in you’re
06:00
gonna want to put dial this down a
06:03
little bit so that you can hold this and
06:05
then now I just put it on reverse and
06:06
I’m holding it not quite enough I need
06:09
to dial it up just a little bit a little
06:11
bit more yeah so that I can actually get
06:16
that thing to come apart okay okay so
06:19
that’s the basics of it now we’ll walk
06:20
through all the other pieces I realized
06:23
I should have showed you the battery –
06:25
you’re so right so the battery pack is
06:29
and all you do to change the battery is
06:31
you just push down on this button here
06:33
and slide it out okay and this one here
06:37
it’s been charging so the lights
06:39
actually read when the battery needs
06:41
charging actually that’s going to pop
06:43
this out I’ll pop in this one let’s see
06:46
that the light actually flashes because
06:48
it’s being charged this one was fully
06:50
charged that’s why it had the red light
06:52
so then now all we do is we just take
06:54
that and we stick it here and slide it
06:58
right in okay so I’m gonna show you how
07:01
to put in drill bits kind of the same
07:03
thing that once you understand how how
07:05
to add your different bits it’s fairly
07:08
easy and there’s so many different
07:10
attachments that you can put that you
07:12
can use for different jobs
07:14
so first we’ll just start with a mic so
07:17
you have wood drill bits and then you
07:19
have metal drill bits okay and the case
07:26
is all the cases are tough to open at
07:30
least for me maybe not for you over
07:31
there for me uh anyway so and you can
07:34
see that I’ve actually lost or broken a
07:37
lot of the smaller bits get broken if
07:39
you’re not careful so I’ve managed to
07:41
hang on to most of the other bits but it
07:45
I managed to hang on to all my metal
07:47
bits these are metal and then these are
07:49
for wood they’re just designed a little
07:51
bit different so when you pick them out
07:52
so I actually put I put wood drill bit
07:54
so I just ended up right not right on
07:56
the side okay so basically the same
07:59
thing again this is a quarter-inch I’m
08:02
gonna put it inside let’s see so I want
08:04
to put it on a lower speed so I can hold
08:07
this and then all I do is I just stick
08:09
it inside there and I just kind of hold
08:11
on to it while it tightens it around it
08:13
and then I hold on to it no it’s in
08:16
there and then now if I want to drill
08:18
for drilling you put it on that drill
08:21
setting okay and then they need to be
08:24
good if you needed more torque for some
08:26
reason where you’re going through metal
08:29
with a metal bit then you put it on too
08:31
and just kind of take it slow
08:34
roll through whenever you’re going
08:36
through metal you want to take that slow
08:38
okay so all right so that’s that okay so
08:44
we got our piece of wood my trusty piece
08:46
of wood that I keep using I’m gonna show
08:48
you how to put a screw in okay so this
08:51
is just a Philips head um tip like I
08:55
showed you and then this I showed these
08:57
screws before I use these all the time
09:00
they’re just sheetrock screws so if you
09:02
go in looking for sheetrock screws at
09:04
the hardware store you should be able to
09:06
find them the nice thing about them is
09:07
they got a nice coarse thread on them
09:09
and they tend to hold pretty well okay
09:12
so I’m gonna go ahead and put my my bit
09:15
back in and just kind of hold it like
09:19
that it’s set on 15 so it might be a
09:21
little hard to hold all right so now I’m
09:24
good and let me show you this so this is
09:26
one of the cool things about how it
09:28
ratchets out and that’s what this is one
09:31
of the things you’d use this setting for
09:32
okay so I’m gonna make sure I’m gonna go
09:37
into my table let’s go from the top then
09:40
so I’m just gonna go here and I’m gonna
09:44
drive down in okay and all you have to
09:47
do is just kind of hold it okay
09:56
ratchet ratchet it out there okay so if
10:09
I put it here and if I if I ratchet this
10:12
thing out watch let me just show you
10:13
this I’m gonna go to it like a a smaller
10:16
setting so I just messed with the
10:17
setting a little bit I’m gonna put it
10:18
like at a five okay and let’s see what
10:21
happens once once it starts trying to
10:24
drive it it’ll ratchet out its
10:29
ratcheting out because if you need to
10:32
tighten this up in order to get it to go
10:33
so we’re gonna go up to let’s go to nine
10:44
still not quite strong enough of doing
10:47
11 okay it’s still not quite sunk so we
10:55
might need to and what I would normally
10:56
do on this is I’d actually take it so
11:12
that’s pretty flush right there so
11:14
that’s what we do for that so let’s take
11:16
that back out okay so that’s for the
11:22
basic screw like that okay
11:25
okay I’m gonna show you a different kind
11:28
of screw this I’ve showed you this
11:30
before when I built my bench it’s a
11:32
coded screw and it’s meant for to go
11:34
outside you’ll see this four decks and
11:36
that sort of thing but the nice thing
11:37
about it being coated they drive in a
11:40
lot easier than those other sheetrock
11:42
screws and it comes with see how it’s
11:45
got a star on it it actually comes with
11:48
the star bit when you buy the when you
11:52
buy the box of these it actually comes
11:55
with a new bit every time so that’s so I
11:57
have lots of these bits um they’re kind
12:00
of nice for that so let me just show you
12:02
real quick so you can just pick that in
12:07
that’s one way to do it and then you can
12:10
stick it in here you kind of just hold
12:15
the top because the top doesn’t have any
12:16
threads on okay so that you don’t hurt
12:19
yourself and we’re gonna drive it down
12:21
it’s on like setting number 12 right now
12:24
let’s see if it goes through not quite
12:30
pretty close okay let’s do it on 13 and
12:34
so the nice thing about that setting is
12:36
it keeps you from over over sinking sea
12:42
so kind of ratchets out where you’re at
12:44
so okay so that’s one way to do that
12:47
another way to do it is like this but
12:51
it’s a little wobbly so I’m going to
12:53
drive the thing all the way in you can
12:56
actually use a bit holder like this this
13:01
one’s actually meant for driving
13:02
sheetrock screws because the nice thing
13:04
about it is it’s got a sleeve on it so
13:06
it can actually yeah I don’t have my bit
13:10
here but you can so you put the screw in
13:13
it’s not gonna cover this one up
13:14
completely but you’ll see will actually
13:17
go there and cover it up so that it’ll
13:20
hold it for you when you’re driving in
13:22
the screw okay okay so this is the bit
13:26
holder and it’s kind of nice it’s got a
13:30
and then the next thing about this is
13:33
that you could if you were gonna put up
13:35
a bunch of sheetrock I don’t have a
13:38
sheetrock so sheetrock’s 1/2 inch and
13:41
you’d probably want to go into the stud
13:43
about an inch so you’d probably use like
13:45
an inch and a half screw I don’t have
13:48
one on me unfortunately this one’s about
13:52
so watch this that’s kind of cool so
13:54
it’s got a sleeve that actually comes
13:57
out on it okay see that it’s got a
14:00
sleeve that’s actually coming out right
14:01
there to help hold that screw right and
14:05
then you just put that in
14:11
sometimes you have to play with that a
14:13
little bit to make sure it’s seated in
14:15
there good okay so we’re gonna do that
14:17
so that guy’s there watch this now so
14:20
you got that sleeve holding it for me
14:27
so and then see how it went down a
14:30
little bit it kind of sunk down a little
14:32
bit I might want to adjust that so you
14:34
might play around with that if you’re
14:35
doing sheet rock you don’t want it to
14:37
sink through because then it’ll go
14:39
through the paper and then it’s not
14:40
really holding good so that’s another
14:42
nice thing about that setting you would
14:44
adjust that maybe play with that a
14:46
little bit right back it off a little
14:48
bit so it’s not sinking through and then
14:50
you’re then you’re going to town just
14:52
kind of going around and setting those
14:54
screws in okay and you can also stick I
15:04
just put a different bit in there right
15:06
I put a screwdriver bit put that star
15:09
back in so that’s another way to drive
15:13
I’m not going to go all the way in
15:14
because I don’t want to go into my table
15:17
but I am and I’ve just kind of Holtz
15:19
yeah I’m holding the party with no
15:23
threads and just kind of help it’s
15:25
helping get helping to get started I
15:27
could slide this down too
15:29
it’s not going to cover the hole drilled
15:32
I could show you on the side of this but
15:36
everything gets kind of wobbly since
15:38
ever since this screw is kind of long
15:39
okay so I think that’s that and then the
15:45
nice thing about this bit holder too if
15:48
you were gonna you can do all kind of
15:50
all kinds of these tips right and this
15:52
is so you take this this tip out stick
15:55
in you know if you’re putting together
15:57
something from Ikea if you’ve ever done
16:00
that and it’s an Allen wrench and it’s
16:02
six hours later you’re still cranking on
16:04
that allen wrench you can stick one of
16:07
these in you know find the right Allen
16:08
wrench that goes in here you put it in
16:10
here your tip and you’re you’re in
16:13
business right there look be a lot
16:15
quicker that’ll speed things up so and
16:18
then this has it has Phillips head and
16:23
that’s what all these are they’re just
16:24
variations here let me turn around
16:26
different variations of a Philips head a
16:28
Philips head is just the one with the
16:31
plus right if you don’t know what that
16:33
is right so those are just different
16:36
thicknesses that will work with
16:37
different screws and then these are just
16:40
considered flat heads okay
16:42
and I always when I pick a screw I avoid
16:45
flat heads at all possible I think if at
16:48
all possible because if you go to stick
16:51
this guy in here and you put it here and
16:53
you have a flat head that you’re trying
16:58
to pull out this thing you’re fighting
17:00
it all the time trying to get that out
17:02
of it okay it’ll slide off and
17:04
everything with that extra cross piece
17:07
on a Philips head it stays in a lot
17:09
better let me show you another trick to
17:12
really quick I was just going to use
17:18
this tip a mistake a lot of people make
17:22
is this when you’re trying to unscrew
17:36
and you want to get it out okay the
17:40
tendency is to one that you put the
17:43
drill in reverse and just and kind of
17:47
help it out but you actually want to
17:48
push down and let the screw do the work
17:51
okay so you’re pushing down to make sure
17:54
that stays inside there and then just
17:56
letting the drill do the work
17:57
okay I think that I know I used to do
18:00
that when I first learned how to use it
18:01
intended to want to help the drill but
18:04
you actually want to push down and let
18:06
the screw do the work and work itself
18:08
out okay okay so remember when we did
18:11
the we put that just bolt through we
18:15
stick the bolt in we have the other
18:19
pieces here and we put that on here and
18:22
we put our locking washer on and then we
18:25
put our nut on right so let’s go ahead
18:29
and do that again and then this time
18:31
we’re gonna use our our drill okay so
18:35
with your drill you can get these
18:37
different adapters that will hold a
18:38
socket okay so we’re gonna go ahead and
18:42
put that in I got it on thirteen so that
18:45
I can hold it again if I tried to do it
18:48
I thought the drill part I couldn’t hold
18:50
it if it was I could go with lower two
18:55
okay so let’s so I got my half-inch
18:59
I’m just gonna put that on there and
19:01
then I’m gonna I can go ahead and
19:04
probably even hold this hand tight for
19:08
and so there’s what’s called deep
19:11
sockets this one isn’t a deep socket so
19:13
it’s probably not going to quite make it
19:14
but they’ll get me close can’t quite get
19:18
there now all I need to do is I’m just
19:21
gonna go hold this side go from this
19:33
you know okay which is good because
19:36
everything is tight you see that my lock
19:38
washer is actually flat its down so so
19:41
we’re good okay so no we go to remove it
19:45
come to the same thing pretty easy you
19:47
just put it in reverse and now it’s just
19:57
working this way off you can see how
20:00
that would speed up putting together
20:02
furniture like if you’re ever putting
20:04
together a dining table or anything a
20:05
lot of times you’re using sockets and/or
20:09
wrenches and a drill will help a lot
20:11
with that so okay yeah let’s show you
20:15
the show you the lighting bolt mount to
20:17
kind of the same thing that lag screw
20:20
you know technically it’s a lag screw a
20:22
lot of people call this a lag bolt but
20:24
it has a point on it so it’s actually a
20:26
like screw okay and that was here this
20:32
one let’s go ahead and put a washer on
20:36
so it doesn’t go into four I’m gonna go
20:38
here just kind of hand tighten it
20:40
started okay put this on here and I’m
20:44
gonna drive it in actually let me turn
20:46
this down so you can see it again if I
20:48
turned down that rap shit’ not gonna
20:51
quite get it okay and so I keep
20:54
tightening it up a little bit more there
20:58
you go yeah set it just just where we
21:02
wanted it I wanted to show you this real
21:03
quick – I forgot all about this so
21:05
somebody had asked what my thoughts were
21:07
on this is some new product that
21:09
supposedly is you know you can use it
21:11
for a lot of different applications it
21:14
seems okay it seems a little bit hokey
21:16
in my opinion so basically I’ll show you
21:20
what it does is you can use it for
21:22
multiple side sizes on there it was
21:30
about $15 I think and you could buy a
21:33
rock ratchet set a socket set for about
21:36
30 or 40 dollars so I would say just get
21:40
a ratchet set but anyway so the
21:43
these little beads are these little
21:46
holders adjust to whatever size you’re
21:49
gonna put it on right so it’ll adjust
21:51
it’ll go it says it goes from 1/4 inch
21:55
to 3/4 or 7 millimeter to 19 millimeter
21:59
and basically all it does is when you
22:00
push it in it just holds it so um you
22:04
know it might work for some things I
22:06
think long term it’s not something I
22:09
would use because again it’s around $15
22:15
anyway and I’m ratchet set for ratchet
22:18
so would give me to be double that but
22:22
that’s not a whole lot of money so
22:24
basically I’m just gonna do so it does
22:27
work again just not something I would
22:30
recommend okay so I’m gonna show you how
22:36
to use some of these bits here so let’s
22:41
start off with just a wood bit okay a
22:44
little wood drill bit we’re gonna stick
22:47
that in here and again we’re gonna move
22:55
that up to the actual drill part okay
22:59
and you just stick it here okay nice and
23:05
clean I have a piece down below that I’m
23:08
using just to protect things right okay
23:10
so that’s that one okay so this is
23:14
called a hole saw I have this one too
23:17
with less teeth and I feel like this
23:19
one’s does a better job okay I think
23:22
those we’re a little cheap anyway so
23:24
let’s go ahead and take it off the grill
23:30
size I’ll put it back on the drill okay
23:33
so now here’s a trick so when you’re
23:39
okay you want to see how it’s got a nice
23:41
clean edge there you want to flip it
23:44
over and come from the other side if I
23:46
don’t I mean there’s two things that
23:48
will happen here so I thought I’m care
23:49
about this wood and I hold this tight
23:51
and they go through it’ll be a clean
23:53
edge on the other side but if I don’t
23:55
hold it tight it’s gonna tear that out
23:56
so you want to flip it over and come
23:59
back from the other side okay okay but
24:14
it would it tore out here if I wouldn’t
24:17
have done that okay if I wouldn’t flip
24:19
it over like that it would have tore out
24:20
so anyway that’s how you use that and
24:23
then you can sometimes it can be a bit
24:26
of a fight to get that piece back out of
24:28
there so there’s a couple ways you can
24:31
pop this out the way I normally do is I
24:33
just loosen this okay and then you can
24:37
just work that up and it’ll come out
24:40
okay or if you’re good then you just
24:44
kind of do it lightly and work your way
24:46
back with your way back the other way
24:48
and then this won’t get stuck in there
24:50
but that’s one way okay okay so this is
24:55
what’s called a speed bit kind of
24:58
similar to the whole I don’t know that
25:02
they come out quite as clean as the
25:03
whole saw but I’m just going to show you
25:05
what those do is I want to pick out a
25:07
one inch and then put it on on the drill
25:15
again drill setting and then the best
25:18
way I’ve found is just to go ahead and
25:19
hold this tight right put another piece
25:22
under that I don’t care about and I’m
25:32
okay and then I drilled drilled through
25:35
here’s another tip I wanted to show you
25:37
it’s called a countersink and the nice
25:39
thing about it is when it goes in it’ll
25:42
put a little it puts a little groove
25:44
right there so that your your screw
25:47
screw head will kind of just sink down
25:49
inside so let’s go ahead and show what
25:51
that looks like okay see that it’s got a
26:06
little hole for the head to sit in okay
26:10
here’s one other kind of cool this is
26:13
kind of a luxury but it’s a it’s a L
26:18
adapter that if you need to reach around
26:20
a corner kind of cool you can put that
26:26
guy on there and then now you can
26:29
actually drill with around the corner so
26:33
I thought I’d show you that I you know I
26:35
only had this for one applications I
26:37
just couldn’t reach and so I ended up
26:40
getting it and it was kind of cool to be
26:41
able to reach around the corner and use
26:44
that so anyway I’ve had to try that as
26:46
well okay so I’ve showed you a lot of
26:51
different ways you can use a drill so
26:52
hopefully that gives you the confidence
26:53
to go ahead and pick one up um you’ll
26:55
they’ll come in so handy you’ll be
26:57
surprised how many different ways you
26:59
can use them besides what I showed you
27:01
there’s probably other things that I’ve
27:02
left out but at least this gives you
27:03
should give you the confidence to
27:07
and then if you get one then you know
27:09
you just get better and better at it
27:10
because you learn the settings there
27:11
pretty soon you’re not even thinking
27:12
while you’re just in those callers to
27:14
change bits it just happens naturally so
27:17
anyway thanks for watching and we’ll see
27:19
you next week on tool tuesday and god
