Jo Adell homers to lead Angels to victory in Cactus League opener

admin

THE GAME: The Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1 in their Cactus League opener on Saturday afternoon in Peoria, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander Tucker Davidson pitched two perfect innings, striking out three. Davidson said he’s been using a new sweeper, which is a slow version of a slider that he’s throwing instead of a curve. He’s also focused on throwing strikes, which was a major issue last year. “The biggest thing for me honestly is to get ahead and put guys away whenever you can,” Davidson said. “I think going out there and just trying to attack, attack, attack is kind of my mindset. Throw your stuff in the box. It’s good. Let them get themselves out.” Davidson is in the running for the sixth spot in the Angels rotation or a spot in the bullpen. He is out of options. … Right-handers Jonathan Webb, Chris Devenski and Jonathan Holder each pitched an inning, with only Holder allowing a run. “All of them are impressive,” Angels manager Phil Nevin said. “They’ve all had really nice years in the big leagues before and had some setbacks last couple years, but all seem very healthy and look good today.” … Left-hander Kolton Ingram pitched a perfect inning, with two strikeouts. Ingram was just added to the 40-man roster this winter.

HITTING REPORT: Jo Adell blasted a two-run homer against Seattle lefty Marco Gonzales in his first at-bat of the spring. Adell, who also drew a walk, hit the homer on a 3-and-1 pitch. He said both at-bats were encouraging. “Just getting good counts to hit has been my focus,” Adell said. “Just working on being patient and waiting for mine.” Adell also struck out. … Kevin Padlo doubled off the left-field fence during the Angels’ four-run second inning. Taylor Jones then drove in two runs. Padlo and Jones are both non-roster invitees who have some big-league experience.

DEFENSE REPORT: Padlo, the first baseman, made a catch of a foul ball against the railing. … The Angels turned two double plays, including one to end the game.
